Edmonton police have arrested two men, charging one of them with 2nd degree murder, in connection with the death of Ryan Jimmo, the 34-year-old former UFC light heavyweight who was killed in a hit-and-run.
Less than a week after UFC veteran Ryan Jimmo was killed in a fatal hit-and-run in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, local police have made a pair of arrests. In a release written on Wednesday, the Edmonton Police Service confirmed that 23-year-old Anthony Getschel is charged with “second degree murder, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and fail to stop at scene of accident involving death,” and 21-year-old Jordan Wagner has been booked on an “accessory after the fact to murder“ charge. No further details on court dates are known at this time, and the press release also noted that neither man had previously known Jimmo prior to Sunday’s fatal altercation.
This news comes two days after police located and seized the truck suspected of striking Jimmo. A police investigation determined that “a brief verbal argument occurred shortly before the incident took place.” Jimmo was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 34. An autopsy revealed that Jimmo died of “blunt force trauma.” When the story first broke on Sunday evening, Edmonton officials had confirmed that they were investigating this as a homicide.
Jimmo (19-5) had a record of 3-4 in the UFC, most notably recording a sensational 7 second KO win over Anthony Perosh in his Octagon debut back in July 2012. He was released from the promotion last year following a unanimous decision defeat to Francimar Barroso in May 2015. Prior to his UFC run, the Canadian won (and twice successfully defended) the Maximum Fighting Championship light heavyweight belt, which included victories over Sokoudjou and Zak Cummings.
