Carlos Condit: Win over ‘not exciting’ Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 21 gets me title shot

Demian Maia — not Tyron Woodley — could have very well be fighting for the welterweight title against Robbie Lawler at this weekend’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Atlanta, Georgia, since he’s on a five-fight win streak.

The problem?

He’s “not the most exciting dude” in the division, according to Carlos Condit, who will be facing the jiu-jitsu ace in the main event of UFC on FOX 21 on Aug., 27, 2016 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

And should “The Natural Born Killer” get a win over Maia, he tells Sirius XM Rush’s Toe-2-Toe with Brian Stann (via MMA Fighting) it will be good enough to give him another crack at the division strap.

“I think that a win in spectacular fashion over Demian Maia gets me the title shot. I don’t see why it wouldn’t. Arguably Demian Maia could be the No. 1 contender. The reason he’s not is because of his fighting style, not the most exciting dude, but he’s beat the who’s-who in the division. So I think that a win over him without a doubt gets me back to a shot and an opportunity to get the belt around my waist.”

Exciting or not, Condit knows Maia is a dangerous threat and can get the job done night in and night out as he’s done over the last two years. And while Carlos says he would take another route if given, he won’t back down from the challenges the submission wizard presents.

“He’s a tough fight. If there was any other way to get to No. 1 contender, I admit I’d probably want to take it too. He’s a tough style match-up for me. But I’ve never backed down from a challenge. It’s exciting to me to try to solve the puzzle that is Demian Maia with the tools that I have.”

The bout will be Condit’s first since losing to the aforementioned Lawler at UFC 195 in a five-round championship war that saw “Ruthless” walk away with a razor-thin split-decision.

Anyone believe a spectacular win over Maia will be good enough to get him back to the big dance?
