In a bizarre scene during a KHL preseason game between Barys Astana and HC Kunlun Red Star, Barys defenseman Damir Ryspayev attempted to take out the entire Kunlun team by fighting each player one by one. Eventually, the match was brought to an end just three minutes into the proceedings.

To understand just how vicious Ryspayev is, he earned 83 penalty minutes in seven games last season and 194 penalty minutes in 23 KHL games. He has been suspended for the remainder of the KHL preseason, according to an official press release from the league.

“Ryspayev’s behaviour has nothing to do with hockey and contradicts not only the rules, but also the spirit of our game. Such actions should not be the case not only in matches involving clubs in the KHL, but also in sports in general.”

While Ryspayev is undoubtedly a controversial player, his physical aggression may have served him better through a career in combat sports.
