Kell Brook needs surgery on broken eye socket following loss to Gennady Golovkin

Kell Brook’s spirited performance against Gennady Golovkin ended in a 5th round corner stoppage, and it’s since been confirmed that GGG broke Brook’s eye socket.

On Saturday at The O2 Arena in London, the corner of IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) threw in the towel during round 5 of his thrilling bout against middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs). The fight was more competitive than expected, and it certainly had the pro-Brook crowd excited. Brook’s right eye was noticeably bothering him from rounds 3-5, and with Golovkin dominating him in the 5th, Brook’s corner called it off, and the cheers turned to boos.

Brook said in the post-fight interview that he believed he’d suffered a broken eye socket and said he was seeing “three or four” of Golovkin during the fight. After being taken to the hospital, Brook said that he needed to undergo an operation in Sheffield. Matchroom Boxing (Brook’s promoter) later confirmed the broken eye socket, with x-ray included.

Seems to me that throwing in the towel was the correct decision, as Brook was getting whipped in the 5th and not responding particularly well. It certainly wasn’t going to get any better for him against someone like GGG.
