TUF 24 results, recap for ‘Benavidez vs Cejudo’ on FOX Sports 1 (Ep. 10)

Tonight’s episode is titled “All on the Line.”

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to FOX Sports 1 on Wednesday night (Nov. 16, 2016) for episode 10 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 24 combat sports reality show, coached by top flyweight contenders and bitter rivals Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo.

In last week’s elimination round, No. 5-seed Hiromasa Ogikubo of Team Benavidez eliminated Team Cejudo’s No. 13-seed Adam Antolin. That set up a pair of quarterfinal fights featuring Ronaldo Candido (No. 7) vs. Eric Shelton (No. 15) and Matt Schnell (No. 6) vs. Tim Elliot (No. 3).

We kick things off inside the gym and since Ronaldo Candido and Eric Shelton are both on Team Benavidez, things get a bit complicated when it comes to training. That’s why “Joe Jitsu” enlists the help of former Team Alpha Male broski and ex-bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw.

Neutral zone!

Like Ronaldo’s last fight, this will be grappler vs. striker and Shelton — who scored his own submission against Yoni Sherbatov — vows to not make the same mistake as Jamie Alvarez back on episode five.

Both fighters make weight without incident.

125 lbs.: Ronaldo Candido (6-0) vs. Eric Shelton (10-2)

Round 1: Touch of gloves and Shelton opens with a high kick. Candido rushes for a takedown but gets nothing, so he kicks and tries again, driving his foe to the fence. Shelton defending well at first but Candido uses a trip to get things south. He worms his way onto Shelton’s back and starts to work his jiu-jitsu. Shelton fires a couple of reverse elbows that land hard. Candido readjusts and loses position in the scramble. Now Shelton is on top throwing punches from half guard. Candido gets full guard and Shelton abandons ship. Shelton with a straight right. Candido walking him down and dives for the takedown off the kick. Shelton fights him off but eats a knee then a low kick. Both fighters trade punches in the pocket and Candido shoots out of desperation to no avail. The round ends with striking and Candido is getting tagged pretty hard. I have it 10-9 Shelton.

Round 2: Shelton opens the round with punches in bunches and Candido shoots for a takedown. He fails. Another shot and gets nothing. He looks exhausted. Shelton opening up with kicks and punches. Another failed shot from Candido as Shelton muscles his way free. Back to the feet and Shelton tries a spinning back fist, which Candido uses to secure the takedown. Unfortunately for him, Shelton is strong enough to escape. Candido shoots again … nothing. Shelton the aggressor now and lands a low kick followed by a jumping punch. Candido needs to do something dramatic here and he settles for some desperation punches. Shelton lands the spinning backfist. Shelton with a huge — and surprising — takedown which no doubt seals the deal. 10-9 Shelton.

Final result: Eric Shelton def. Ronaldo Candido by unanimous decision

With that bout in the books, we set our sights on the second fight of the night. Matt Schnell is repping Team Cejudo while Tim Elliot trains with Team Benavidez. That will alleviate any training conflicts leading up to the bout.

Both fighters make weight without incident.

125 lbs.: Matt Schnell (10-2) vs. Tim Elliot (13-6-1)

Round 1: We open with a touch of gloves, then dual leg kicks and Elliot gets a foot square to the pills. Ouch. Time is called while Elliot recovers. Fight restarts and Elliot comes in fast and furious which means he wants revenge or is still in pain and wants the fight to end in a hurry. He ties up Schnell and quickly takes his back. Schnell not having it and unloads a flurry. Elliot returns fire. Schnell thinks he has an opening for a guillotine and drops down but loses position and now has Elliot on top. Elliot gets a little too greedy from guard and gets caught in a triangle but maintains his composure and escapes — right into an armbar. He picks Schnell up and slams him on his head like a jackhammer until the arms gets freed. Elliot on top raining down punches as Schnell hunts for the submission. Fast-paced round. Schnell tries to get off the floor and Elliot locks up an airtight front choke. Schnell has nowhere to go but sleepsville so he taps.

Final result: Tim Elliot def. Matt Schnell by submission
