Velasquez scheduled for yet another surgery after Werdum rematch at UFC 207
Cain Velasquez says he already has another surgery scheduled post-UFC 207.
Even if Cain Velasquez beats Fabricio Werdum in the heavyweight rematch at UFC 207, the former champion is likely to face even more time on the sidelines.
During the announcement of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, a new ‘industry redefining’ association represented by the likes of Velasquez, Georges St-Pierre and Donald Cerrone, Velasquez revealed that he will undergo yet another surgery after UFC 207.
The 34-year-old has already had seven surgeries but has still managed to prove himself as one of the best heavyweights in the world.
“I wanted to talk about something that I know far too well,” Velasquez said, per MMA Fighting’s Dave Doyle. “My first fight in the UFC was in 2008. Since that time, I’ve had seven surgeries. Two meniscus surgeries, one MCL surgery on my right knee, taking cartilage out of my left elbow, both shoulder I’ve had torn labrums that needed repairing, and back surgery. I have a fight Dec. 30. After that fight, I’m already scheduled for my next surgery.”
Velasquez said his frequent injuries helped motivate him to join the MMAAA and believes that the association will help to push for improved health policies across the board.
“It’s not just for me, it’s for other UFC fighters who are going through the same thing and have gone through the same thing,” Velasquez said. “For us, in the future, there is no post-retirement health plan. That’s why I think it’s important for what we’re doing now, us fighters coming together and having the rest of the UFC roster come together to make our lives better now and in the future.”
The American Kickboxing Academy fighter didn’t delve into the details of his surgery but has faced prolonged periods of absence in the past. Velasquez has fought just four times in the past three years and is one of the most injury prone fighters on the roster.
Should he avenge his loss to Werdum, Velasquez will likely be selected as the next No. 1 contender and will look to challenge Stipe Miocic for the HW title. His surgery, however, could certainly throw a wrench in those plans.
UFC 207, which features Werdum vs Velasquez on the main card, takes place on Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
