Bjorn Rebney reveals story behind his 2014 ‘MEXICO!!’ tweet

Did you ever want to know the origin of Bjorn Rebney’s “MEXICO!!” tweet from two years ago? The man himself explains what happened.

On June 18th, 2014, Viacom announced that Bellator MMA CEO Bjorn Rebney was let go from the very company he founded, which paved the way for Scott Coker to come in as the promotion’s new President.

Eleven days later, Rebney made this seemingly random tweet that would stand as his last one until February 2016.

MEXICO!!

— Bjorn Rebney (@BjornRebney) June 29, 2014

The MMA Twittersphere unsurprisingly took off with it, and even to this day still periodically retweets Bjorn’s “MEXICO!!” shout. What exactly was Bjorn talking about? Was he on vacation in Mexico? Did he buy property and permanently move to Mexico? Did he flick on the radio and hear a James Taylor song from 1975? So many questions, but we never got an answer … that is, until now.

Rebney was recently on The MMA Hour, where the main focus was on his role as an advisor on the MMA Athletes Association, but the people demanded to know the story behind that infamous tweet. As it turns out, it was a drunken shout during the 2014 FIFA World Cup round of 16 game between Mexico and the Netherlands.

“We clicked back on and Mexico had scored,” Rebney said. “So I tweeted, ‘MEXICO!!’ And then the bottom fell out and the Netherlands won. I was like, ‘You know what? I’m an idiot and I’m breaking my own rule.’ So I just stopped tweeting from that moment forward. And it became this infamous tweet like I’d gone to Mexico with Pablo Escobar, but it wasn’t.

“It was just a dude who was really excited drinking beer with a bunch of buddies and then suddenly it didn’t go well,” Rebney continued, “and I just said, ‘You know what? That’s probably the end of the tweeting for the next couple of years.'”

Rebney’s most recent tweet was on December 9th, when he ripped into UFC fighter pay compared to how much their executives and staff members were making.
