Chael Sonnen: If Ronda Rousey has some time, ‘I think she should’ train with Floyd Mayweather

Bellator 170 headliner Chael Sonnen spoke with TMZ about Floyd Mayweather’s offer to help train Ronda Rousey.

Two weeks after Ronda Rousey’s loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, Floyd Mayweather Jr. offered up his services to help Rousey improve her boxing abilities.

“I’ll work with her if she’s willing to work with me,” Mayweather said to TMZ. “I don’t have anything against anyone, we’re willing to work with her.”

What a far cry from the once-frequent discussion of Rousey actually fighting Mayweather. Anyway, moving on…

TMZ had Chael Sonnen in their Los Angeles studio ahead of his Bellator 170 main event fight vs. Tito Ortiz, and asked him for his thoughts on whether or not Rousey should take up Floyd’s offer.

“Hey, if you can get some rounds in with Floyd, go do it,” Sonnen said. “But don’t forget, Floyd’s a great boxer, he’s not a trainer, he’s never trained anybody.

“If Ronda’s got some time to go work with him, I think she should take him up on it, because that is still Floyd and I’d think it’d be a cool experience, but I’m talking about an hour and then call it good.”

Okay, so Chael isn’t buying the idea of Rousey training for any extended period of time with Mayweather, but did admit that Floyd’s deep knowledge of the sport could be beneficial for the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion.

“I would have to think that he could [impart some knowledge], in fairness,” Sonnen said. “But, I think we could all agree what makes people great players does not make them great coaches. It usually doesn’t transfer. I’m just talking about for a cameo, for some PR stuff, for something for us to talk about over here at TMZ, let’s do it.”

Bellator 170: Ortiz vs. Sonnen airs live on Spike TV at 9 PM ET/PT on Saturday, January 21st.
