UFC president Dana White says he contacted Nick Diaz’s team for a possible fight against Demian Maia, and has yet to receive a response.
Last August, Nick Diaz’s 18-month suspension had officially lapsed. But as of this moment, the UFC has yet to give him his next fight date and opponent.
The former welterweight title contender did remain relevant through his absence. Upon the end of his suspension, his name was immediately linked to current 170-pound champion Tyron Woodley. However, it was a fight he turned down according to Woodley, who says it was because Diaz “wants to get paid.”
From their end, the UFC is scouring its roster for a possible opponent for Diaz. According to UFC president Dana White, they already reached out to Diaz’s team for offers.
“I offered Nick Diaz the (Robbie) Lawler fight and he turned it down. Lawler accepted the fight and Nick turned it down so I’m looking for something else for Lawler right now,” White said on a recent edition of the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via FOX Sports). “(Diaz’s team) were terrorizing me saying ‘we want a fight’ so they wanted to announce it that night at the Sacramento card (at FOX UFC Fight Night). Cause he was there, it’s the right crowd, it’s close to his hometown and they wanted to announce it.
“I got Robbie Lawler to accept the fight, I called him, and they turned it down and they’ve been radio silent on me ever since.”
White says he tried one more time by throwing in another name, but has yet to receive a response.
“I just reached out to (Diaz’s team) and said what do you guys think about a fight with Demian Maia? I haven’t heard back from them yet. If Nick doesn’t take it, I’ll give it to (Jorge) Masvidal.”
From his end, Maia prefers to wait on the winner of the upcoming Tyron Woodley-Stephen Thompson rematch at UFC 209 on March 4th.
