Floyd Mayweather Jr. reacts to Conor McGregor’s claim that he will shock the world and knock out one of boxing’s all-time greats.
Just over a week ago, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor boldly screamed at boxing writers that he “will stop Floyd [Mayweather]. You’re all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words!” He also shouted, “I am Batman!” “I am boxing!” before walking away from reporters at the Madison Square Garden Theater, where his friend Mick Conlan won his pro boxing debut.
How did Floyd Mayweather respond to McGregor’s guarantee that he’ll be the one to knock him out and hand him his first loss of his professional career? Well if you were expecting a fiery set of quotes and trash-talking towards the Irishman, prepare to be disappointed. (Via FightHype, with transcription from MMA Fighting)
“I feel like he’s entitled to feel the way he wants to feel. Only thing you can do is respect that.
“I just want to say, Dana White, I was overseas when they told me what you said. I wanna say, good work Dana White. Conor McGregor, they said you finally opened your mouth and you’re back to talking s—t and I say that’s cool too.
“With me, it is what it is. If I can’t do nothing, everybody knows I can fight, if I can’t do nothing else. But when I’m not in the ring, I’m a gentleman. Outside the ring, I’m a gentleman.”
Reality definitely disagrees with that “I’m a gentleman” line from Mayweather.
There were no updates as far as whether or not this boxing match will soon become reality. McGregor said the target date was September, while Floyd wanted the fight to happen in June. UFC president Dana White has certainly changed his stance on this matchup between two of combat sport’s biggest PPV stars ever happening, as evidenced by his recent appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show.
