What Went Wrong at UFC Fight Night 107?
Quite a bit to be perfectly honest. Jimi Manuwa showed his characteristic lack of volume, but had far more success stuffing Corey Anderson’s takedowns than I expected and wound up sparking him with one of the only punches he landed.
Picking Teemu Packalen over Marc Diakiese was not about their respective talents, but about Diakiese’s inability to fully utilize his. He utilized the hell out of them against Packalen. And had I known about his pilgrimage to American Top Team, I may have reconsidered. Oh, well.
Scott Askham arguably beat Brad Scott on one leg and, I believe, showed that he had the talent to win that fight. I don’t regret the pick, but it was another excellent example of how much can go wrong when betting on this sport.

Myles Jury (-400) vs. Mike De La Torre (+325) Kamaru Usman (-335) vs. Sean Strickland (+275) Shane Burgos (-200) vs. Charles Rosa (+170) Jan Blachowicz (-125) vs. Patrick Cummins (+105) Gregor Gillespie (-220) vs. Andrew Holbrook (+180) Josh Emmett (-230) vs. Des Green (+190) Katlyn Chookagian (-170) vs. Irene Aldana (+150) Magomed Bibulatov (-485) vs. Jenel Lausa (+385)
Thoughts: I see before me fertile ground, though maybe not quite as fertile as when the lines first came out. Still, I think we can squeeze value out of Shane Burgos, Pat Cummins, Irene Aldana and Magomed Bibulatov.
I’ve got very high hopes for “Hurricane” Shane. He’s strong, has brutal power and is slick as hell on the counter. Rosa, who’s far more of a scrambler than an imposing takedown artist, faces an uphill battle, especially since Burgos’ hands-down attack lends itself well to takedown defense against lesser strikers. “Boston Strong” is also coming off a sizable layoff, so shove Burgos in a parlay.
Yes, Cummins wilts under pressure, but the lightest puncher who has stopped him is Daniel Cormier, who has scored some dramatic finishes before. It generally takes a long barrage of power strikes to put away “Durkin” and strong wrestling to stay standing long enough to throw it. With just five knockouts in 25 fights and historically weak takedown defense, Blachowicz is the perfect opponent for Cummins’ rehab tour.
Aldana’s being written off because of her loss to Leslie Smith, which is understandable, but I feel that’s a shallow interpretation. Smith has the pressure and concrete chin to stifle the offensively minded slugger, while Chookagian offers far less volume and less proven punch resistance. If she trades with Aldana, she’s in for a rough night.
Bibulatov is a beast. Even among the “-ov” monsters, he’s a stud. I have every reason to believe he’ll run over Lausa and, if I’m wrong, I get the personal satisfaction of seeing one of Ramzan Kadyrov’s compatriots lose.

Thoughts: Daniel Cormier has not defended his 205-pound title in 19 months. Even so, I believe he wins this again. Cormier is a mean, clever bastard in the cage, brutally taxing to fight and possessed of one of the division’s highest fight IQs. He has the confidence of surviving Rumble’s power, a trait none of Johnson’s UFC victims can claim, and a far more malleable gameplan than his foe’s seek-and-destroy stylings. I say he retains and I’ve got my money where my mouth is.
