Anderson Silva still wants Roy Jones fight, Jose Aldo wants Miguel Cotto

As Anderson Silva reiterates his boxing aspirations, Jose Aldo is looking to follow suit.

Long before Conor McGregor made noise about transitioning into boxing to fight Floyd Mayweather, Anderson Silva was already pushing for his own stint inside the ring. “The Spider” has been campaigning for a possible fight against four-division champion Roy Jones Jr for years now.

Now 41 years of age but still in active competition facing the top fighters of the UFC’s 185-pound division, Silva continues to hold onto his aspirations to face Jones sometime in the future.

“First, it was always a dream to fight a guy like Roy Jones,” Silva said during Tuesday’s UFC 212 press in Rio de Janeiro (via MMA Fighting). “I’m a fan. Second, it was always something that I wanted. I’ve followed Roy Jones since he was an Olympic athlete, and I’ve always looked up to his style of boxing.

“It’s something I always wanted to do. Regardless of being in the UFC or not, it was always something I wanted to do.”

By the looks of things, an Anderson Silva-Roy Jones match up is far from being a reality. But if it does happen, Jose Aldo also wants in on the action, and has actually named a top-tier veteran boxer that he intends to face.

“If it does happen, I want to be in this card, too, boxing. I’ll challenge, I don’t know, Miguel Cotto, something like that,” Aldo said. “I want to surf this wave as well.”

“If it happens, Dana…Don’t forget me, Joe Carr. Don’t forget me because if it happens I want to fight, brother. We can go for takedowns, too. No problem.”

UFC 212 is slated for June 3rd in Rio de Janeiro. Aldo will be headlining the card against interim champion Max Holloway, while Silva’s opponent has yet to be finalized after original matchup Kelvin Gastelum was removed from the fight due to a positive marijuana test.
