UFC fighter rankings: Rumble’s retirement shakes up light heavyweight

The latest UFC rankings update has Kelvin Gastelum out of middleweight due to a failed drug test, while Anthony Johnson is out of light heavyweight after his retirement.

The first UFC rankings update of April has arrived, and there are plenty of changes to the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Kelvin Gastelum’s USADA failure for marijuana means he’s off the 185 lbs rankings until further notice. Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson’s surprise retirement after UFC 210 makes an already weak 205 lbs top-15 look even weaker. Shogun has a real shot at fighting for the belt again. In 2017. Women’s Strawweight: Jessica Aguilar flips spots with Felice Herrig, moving up to 12th while Herrig drops to 13th.

Flyweight: No changes

Women’s Bantamweight: Katlyn Chookagian’s win over Irene Aldana sees her re-enter the rankings at #14. Jessica Eye drops to #15, while Leslie Smith is no longer ranked.

Men’s Bantamweight: No changes

Featherweight: Charles Oliveira was ranked #8, but his move to lightweight means he can’t be ranked at 145 for the time being. Everyone 9th-15th moves up a spot, while Myles Jury rounds out the list.

Middleweight: Gegard Mousasi’s wacky TKO over Chris Weidman gets him to 4th, while Weidman falls further to 5th. Kelvin Gastelum’s temporary removal from his #8 spot benefits everyone ranked below him, including Derek Brunson and Tim Boetsch. Judo Dan Kelly cracks the list at 15th.

Most notably, Mauricio Rua is #4, Volkan Oezdemir is #5, and Corey Anderson is #6. This division is sad. Jan Blachowicz’s loss to Patrick Cummins (who is now 11th) sees him drop from 12th to 14th. Jared Cannonier enters the rankings at 15th. At least when Jon Jones’ suspension is up he’ll be back on this list.
