Gegard Mousasi on Ronda Rousey: ‘She doesn’t have the skills of a stand-up fighter‘

Dutch middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi shared some thoughts regarding the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion.

He may not be fighting for a bit, but don’t think for a second that Gegard Mousasi isn’t going to keep making headlines.

During a media tour in Singapore to promote the upcoming UFC Fight Night 111 card for June 17th, he touched upon the accolades and media coverage surrounding former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Mousasi was critical of how the media whirlwind covered Rousey during the apex of her career while ignoring her flaws as a mixed martial artist.

“She’s a good fighter, she has the mentality of a fighter, but she doesn’t have the skills of a stand-up fighter,” he said.

“How can the media make her one of the best fighters when she can’t even kick or punch? That’s like Serena Williams [playing] without a backhand. How do they make her the greatest fighter of all time?”

As a reminder, Mousasi and Rousey have trained together in the past. The comments themselves do not appear malicious, but it is a very clear-cut criticism with no sugar-coating at all.

Rousey has yet to make any announcements regarding her future in the sport after her defeat at the hands of Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 last December.

In the meantime, Mousasi continues to wait for the situation to clear up at the top of the middleweight division. Mousasi is still riding the momentum of his win over former champion Chris Weidman in at UFC 210 last month, and continues to be quite vocal these days. And a lot of fans can’t seem to get enough.
