Chuck Liddell gives credence to comeback rumors, says ‘we’ll see’

It doesn’t sound any more definite than before that Liddell is coming back to MMA, but the ‘Iceman’ certainly isn’t putting any rumors to bed.

A return to competition certainly doesn’t sound like it’s off the table for Chuck Liddell. The former UFC light heavyweight champion has been the focal point for rumors about a possible end to a retirement that started back in 2010. He’s been in the gym, getting some sparring and padwork in, he looks like he’s in great shape, and he’s talked in the past about wanting to fight again.

Recently, TMZ Sports caught up with Liddell for an on-the-spot update as to what his career plans are, and whether or not they’re going to include fighting.

“I’m always a source of controversy and speculation,” Liddell teased, adding “Oh man, I don’t know, I’m not really a betting man,” when pressed about his MMA return.

When asked for a definitive ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, Liddell stayed elusive. “We’ll see,” he said. “I am retired right now, so we’ll see.”

Liddell’s longtime coach, John Hackleman, recently told the Anik & Florian Podcast that if Liddell were to return to MMA, it would all be down to finding the right opponent. But, if that’s the bar for Chuck to get his coach’s blessing, it’s not a criteria that Liddell seems to be interested in.

“No, no my decision wouldn’t depend on that,” he said when asked if his interest in returning would depend on the fight waiting for him when he came back.

Eventually, Liddell hardly sounds like he’s about to step back into the cage tomorrow. But, the lure of competition rarely fades, and it doesn’t sound like the ‘Iceman’ is quite ready to let it go just yet.
