Dana White’s Contender Series Week 2: Spohn vs. DeAnda live results, discussion, play-by-play
Live, blow-by-blow updates for the inaugural edition of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. The main event of tonight’s show features light heavyweights Daniel Spohn and Angel DeAnda.
Tonight (Tuesday, July 18th) brings us episode 2 of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, which will highlight up-and-coming talent, as well as some former UFC fighters looking for a second crack at the big time. Winners aren’t guaranteed a UFC contract, but it certainly helps to not only win, but win impressively. Bloody Elbow is here to bring you live play-by-play for this five-fight event at The Ultimate Fighter gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The main event is a light heavyweight bout between one-time UFC fighter Daniel Spohn and former WSOF fighter Angel DeAnda. Spohn is the only ex-UFC guy on the card, and as a TUF 19 cast member, the TUF gym is a familiar venue for him. Unlike UFC main events, Contender Series headliners are three-rounders.
Daniel Spohn vs. Angel DeAnda – Light Heavyweights
Round 1 – Nine seconds in and a groin shot. That’s quick. DeAnda is recovered and he cracks Spohn with some good punches. Slow spinning back kick by Spohn. Counter right hand tags Spohn. DeAnda spams rights in the clinch while Spohn can’t connect cleanly on the knee. Combination by DeAnda and Spohn may have been rocked. Spohn just getting overwhelmed with head and body punches. Big uppercut floors Spohn! DeAnda pounces and this is over! Or is it? Spohn may have been hit in the back of the head. Well he definitely was based on the replay. Multiple times. The doctor is in and Spohn says he’s okay. Spohn is cleared to continue and DeAnda is deducted a point. Fight restarts. Spohn charges forward and drops DeAnda and he’s teeing off with a series of lefts! DeAnda is hurt! Can you believe this?! Now Spohn has DeAnda’s back and the tables have turned. Spohn goes to the ground and has the arm-triangle and DeAnda taps!!! DeAnda taps!!! That is an incredible comeback by Spohn!! What a heartbreaking defeat for DeAnda.

Sean O’Malley vs. Alfred Khashakyan – Bantamweights
Round 1 – Front kick to the body from O’Malley. Khashakyan get drilled with a flying knee after he walked O’Malley down and threw some punches. Spinning backfist from O’Malley misses. Takedown from Khashakyan and he is throwing some serious ground-and-pound. O’Malley going for an armbar but can’t get it. Khashakyan keeps raining down punches. They’re back to their feet. Spinning kick by O’Malley fails and he gets countered hard. Quick left hook for Khashakyan. Hard left hand from O’Malley. Stiff jab by Khashakyan. O’Malley eats shots to the head and body! This is fun. Big right and down goes Khashakyan! Head kick and a flying knee from O’Malley. Khashakyan is upright but he’s still hurt. Spinning backfist from O’Malley. Another right by O’Malley! Khashakyan is on seriously wobbly legs and there are 80 seconds left or so. Big right again by O’Malley! He misses on the uppercut. Khashakyan lands a shot, eats another punch, then fails on the takedown. O’Malley walking Khashakyan down and a brutal right hand ices Khashakyan. Dana White jumped out of his seat when that KO happened. Pretty sure O’Malley has gotten himself a UFC contract.

Thanh Le vs. Lazar Stojadinovic – Featherweights
Round 1 – Hard kick to the body by Le and Stojadinovic goes for a heel hook after getting put off balance. No dice. Another lethal body kick by Le. Head kick stuns Stojadinovic but he doesn’t go down. These kicks by Le was vicious. Lazar closes the distance and wants the takedown. Right hand on the exit as they go back to range striking. Body kick by Lazar lands to the right side of Le’s body. Crisp right hand by Le. Wheel kick attempt by Le as the round ends and it whiffs. 10-9 Le.
Round 2 – Body kick and left hand by Le. Beautiful work. Stojadinovic swarms Le with a bunch of heavy punches, of which a couple land against the fence. Le seems to have taken the shots well. Huge head kick drops Stojadinovic and then ground strikes from Le end the fight. The hammerfists put Lazar out for good.

Round 1 – Outlaw drops for a single and dumps Cora on the canvas. Cora is looking to wall walk but his legs are tied up in an Outlaw triangle. Outlaw is able to get into half-guard but isn’t doing much in the way of damage. A couple of right hands land for Outlaw as Cora isn’t anywhere nearer to getting back to his feet. Short elbows from Outlaw and Cora is up to his feet, but Outlaw still has the back, and drags him down. Cora with stay-busy punches and I think he’s going for the rear-naked choke. Arm doesn’t look underneath the chin and it isn’t. Cora is safe for now. Ten seconds left and this time the choke looks tight, but Cora does enough to survive. On the basis of Cora having no offense, 10-8 Outlaw.
Round 2 – Left high kicks from Cora aren’t getting through. Kick is caught and Outlaw is ready to dump him again. Foot sweeps him down and now Cora is able to at least get into a seated position, but not for much longer. Again Outlaw has the back and Cora just can’t get anything going. This is uh … not fun to watch. Cora tries to spin but Outlaw is privy to it and maintains back control. One minute to go and the ref tells them to work, and wouldn’t you know it? Outlaw has a rear-naked choke locked up and surely this is over. What? Somehow it isn’t! Cora was grimacing in pain and I thought he was going to go out. Well how about that? But it’s still 2-0 for Outlaw. 20-17 Outlaw.
Round 3 – Fifty seconds in and barely anything has been thrown. Cora is just not letting his hands (or legs) go and he’s the one who needs to finish the fight. He fires off an uppercut and misses. Another uppercut may have cracked Outlaw as he changed levels, but he doesn’t seem fazed by it and Cora is in danger of being taken down again. Cora throwing a bunch of annoying punches to deter Outlaw, and he is undeterred. Takedown completed for Outlaw. Referee is unimpressed with the lack of offense and stands them up. Cora needs to go for broke. Head kick by Cora. Takedown by Outlaw is thwarted and Cora uses that to go on top. Cora with ground-and-pound. He needs a stoppage. He scores with a few lefts but Outlaw is holding on from closed guard. Final seconds to go and Cora rains down elbows and punches but no TKO arrives. 10-9 Cora but 29-27 Outlaw on my scorecard.

CJ Hamilton vs. Casey Kenney – Flyweights
Round 1 – Leg kick by Hamilton right away. Head kick from Kenney and then Hamilton returns fire. Two body kicks from Kenney and they clinch up. Hamilton with an uppercut on the exit. Another sharp uppercut by Hamilton. Head kick by Kenney and somehow Hamilton didn’t go down. That looked like a fight-ending kick. Kenney with a combination. Huge elbow by Kenney against the fence. This is a hell of a round already. Trip attempt by Kenney fails but he scores with a right. Big straight left by Kenney. Hamilton tags Kenney with a right! One minute to go in this opening round. Body punch and body kick by Kenney. He closes the distance and puts Hamilton up against the fence. Hamilton eats an elbow but reverses Kenney against the fence. Kenney with a huge knee and Hamilton is rocked. Casey finishes the round with a couple of kicks to the body. 10-9 Kenney.
Round 2 – Hamilton comes out as the aggressor and he misses with a hook kick. Kenney with a counter left hand as Hamilton surges forward. Right-left from Kenney, who eats a left hand of his own. Kenney with the level change, control of both legs, and he still can’t get Hamilton down. Great balance from Hamilton but he’s in danger of giving up his back. He avoids it and now he’s tagging Kenney with nice combination punching. Kenney with a couple of good shots and now he goes for the takedown again. This time Hamilton is down and Kenney has both hooks in. Hamilton might be in trouble. Kenney going for the rear-naked choke but he’s got wrist control and fights the hands Casey remains draped on his back and switches arms, and Hamilton continues to fend it off. Hamilton escapes and Kenney slips off the back. They’re back to their feet with under a minute to go. Some sloppy punches are exchanged. Kenney going for the front headlock, gets himself some top position time and elbows Hamilton to end the round. 20-18 Kenney.
Round 3 – Both men look pretty spent to start the final round. Head kick by Hamilton slaps the foot on the face. Single-leg attempt by Kenney and Hamilton stuffs it. Hamilton leans on Kenney for a little bit and then they separate. Kenney evades the uppercut and then Hamilton sprawls on another takedown. Nice knee by Hamilton! Kenney looks the more exhausted of the two. Hamilton whiffs on the spinning back elbow and then on the right uppercut. Kenney throws a knee to the body. Well-timed double for Kenney this time, and crucially so. He’s on Hamilton’s half-guard with two minutes remaining. Hamilton is really not doing much and the half-guard is loose. Nice elbow by Kenney. Hamilton going for a kimura from the bottom and he hasn’t a hope of getting it, even to sweep. It costs him his back and essentially that was his last throw of the dice. Ten seconds left and Kenney has this fight locked up. 30-27 Kenney.
