Tyron Woodley: Robbie Lawler gets no title shot because he crawled in a hole and hid like Ronda Rousey

When making a mixed martial arts (MMA) comparison, you probably wouldn’t think former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight kingpin Robbie Lawler and ex-women’s Bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey, would have much in common.

Not so, says Tyron Woodley, who claims “Ruthless” and “Rowdy” do have one key thing in common, which is why Lawler doesn’t deserve a championship rematch later this year.

“Why do I fight Lawler? What has he done in this last year besides crawl up in a ball and hide?” Woodley asked on a recent appearance on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting). “That’s what Ronda Rousey did. He didn’t do that when he knocked out everybody else. I didn’t do that when I got knocked out. I came back, I shook myself else off, I got myself back up.”

No chill.

Woodley stopped Lawler at UFC 201 in July of 2016 to win the 170-pound strap. “Ruthless” returned after more than a year away from action to (narrowly) defeat Donald Cerrone at last weekend’s (Sat., July 29, 2017) UFC 214 PPV event in Anaheim, California.

But barely edging out “Cowboy” isn’t enough to get a chance to reclaim his strap, according to Woodley.

“I just don’t feel like someone that’s taken a year off, as much as I know Dana loves Robbie and the fans love Robbie — I love Robbie, Robbie’s a dope fighter, we were friends before that fight, I feel bad that we haven’t really communicated that much since then — but I just don’t feel as if a fighter who I knocked out in 46 seconds takes a year off, comes back and wins a fight kinda close, and jumps right back into the title picture. So, there’s no clear contenders right now,” he concluded.

Woodley’s return to action is uncertain at the moment, as he suffered a shoulder injury in his much-criticized title defense against Demian Maia at UFC 214, which resulted in another spat with Dana White. “The Chosen One” says he plans on getting a second and third opinion before going under the knife.

If Woodley rides the pine for an extended period of time, that could give the rest of the contenders at 170 pounds time to prove their worth for a shot at gold.
