Randy Couture talks about the potential heavyweight matchup between Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar.
Randy Couture knows a thing or two about former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, and the UFC Hall of Famer believes light heavyweight champ Jon Jones has ‘all the tools’ to beat him.
Couture, who retired from MMA competition in 2011, lost his heavyweight title to Lesnar at UFC 91 in 2008. ‘The Natural’ put up a good fight against ‘The Beast Incarnate’ early on but succumbed to Lesnar’s signature ground-and-pound in the second round.
Lesnar is currently serving a one-year suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs at UFC 200, but that didn’t stop ‘Bones’ from calling out the WWE star last month.

Jones, who knocked out Daniel Cormier to reclaim the light heavyweight belt at UFC 214, told Lesnar that he plans to kick his ‘ass’. Lesnar, whose decision win over Mark Hunt was overturned to a No Contest, entertained Jones’ call out and told him to be careful what he wishes for.
Couture, who turned 54 in June, believes that Jones has the striking, wrestling, and range to compete with Lesnar.
“He can compete with Lesnar,” Couture told TMZ Sports in a recent interview (h/t Rory Marsden of Bleacher Report). He’s long, rangy, a great wrestler, very dynamic striking. He’s got all the tools he needs to compete with Lesnar. He’s got to get some very big partners and get used to it. Worst-case scenario, he gets knocked down and Lesnar gets on top of him. He’s got to be able to survive that. So we’ll see.”
Given that Lesnar is currently suspended and would have to re-enter the USADA drug testing pool upon his return, don’t expect to see Jones vs. the WWE universal champion any time soon.
