Fight card no longer subject to change!
With the weigh-ins complete (see staredown here), Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are now officially set to compete later tonight (Sat., Aug. 26, 2017) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. No titles are on the line because Mayweather is coming out of a two-year retirement to box UFC’s Lightweight champion, who has no professional Sweet Science experience. However, there is a jewel-encrusted “Money Belt” up for grabs, along with of course pride, legacy and boxing’s reputation.
The glove size for the bout has been set at eight ounces. Compare that to mixed martial arts (MMA) gloves, which are between 4 oz. and 6 oz. and boxing gloves that range from 8 oz. to 20 oz. Mayweather has worn 10 oz. gloves for many of his recent fights, and this was a last-minute exception to the existing Nevada statute that sets 8 oz. gloves for fights under 147 pounds and 10 oz. gloves for those above.
Mayweather and McGregor are expected to climb through the ropes sometime before midnight later this evening. The bout, which will be contested at 154 pounds, is scheduled for 12, three-minute rounds. And the longer the fight goes, the more it favors Mayweather, whose average bout duration is 23 minutes, while McGregor has never fought for more than 25 minutes, averaging just under five minutes in the cage throughout his 24-fight MMA career.
Nevertheless, before Mayweather and McGregor hook ‘em up, FOX Sports will host a pair of “Prelims” undercard matches at 7 p.m. ET before the transition to pay-per-view (PPV) at 9 p.m. ET. There, Showtime will feature three world title fights to build up to the highly-anticipated main event.
