Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe discusses the live gate and empty seats at last weekends Mayweather-McGregor mega-fight.
This past Saturday night’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Conor McGregor mega-fight is trending toward breaking some records, but the live gate totals are still up in the air. The T-Mobile Arena was home to the fight that only saw a crowd of 14,623 fans, which was more than 6,000 less than the last major boxing card the venue hosted (H/T MMA Junkie), Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. on May 7, 2017.
At the press conference that followed the fight, Mayweather boasted to the media that the gate was around $80M, however, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe wasn’t willing to commit to an estimate. He addressed questions at the press conference, specifically if he felt they over-priced the tickets.
“I wouldn’t say that. Sometimes it is all about delivery. It was a great event with a wonderful turnout. We don’t always get it right. We get it right more often than not, though.”
Ellerbe also replied to questions regarding Mayweather’s statement that the gate would be bigger than the whopping $72M gate from 2015’s Mayweather-Pacquiao card.
“We are in good shape. I am confident we are in good shape. I am not really ready to commit to talking about that until we dig down and see what the numbers are. Again, we’ll have a pretty good indication next week where we’re at.”
The flamboyant CEO also answered queries about two sections of seating that remained empty during the spectacle.
“I guess because people weren’t in the seats.”
