Report: TUF coaches Alvarez and Gaethje to throw down at UFC 218

The Ultimate Fighter 26 coaches will fight on December 2nd in Detroit, Michigan.

If you’re like us, you’ve been waiting with baited breath for the return of Justin Gaethje to action. The former WSOF champion, one of the best kept secrets in MMA, made his UFC debut during the finale of The Ultimate Fighter season 25 in July, smashing Michael Johnson in a fight of the year contender. Shortly after, the UFC set him up to coach TUF 26 opposite Eddie Alvarez.

Now a report from BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor has a date set for the coach rumble: UFC 218, which goes down December 2nd from Detroit, Michigan.

I’m told @Ealvarezfight and @Justin_Gaethje will collide at #UFC218 in Detroit. Would have loved to see them throw down here in Winnipeg

One downside of Alvarez and Gaethje throwing down on a PPV (aside from the $60 price tag) is it means they’re probably not going to be the main event. No main event means no five round fight, and if there’s any fight we’d love to have extended from three rounds to five, it’s this one.

Not like Gaethje is used to needing that long. His last decision (one of two over his entire career) was back in 2014. Alvarez has gone to the scorecards a bit more, but we have our doubts this one will last longer than 15 minutes.

UFC 218 still doesn’t have a headlining fight attached. Originally there was talk that the UFC wanted to set up Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title, but any chance of that went down the toilet along with the rest of Jones’ career with his latest drug test failure. We’ll keep you up to date on any further developments in the card, which is already looking like a must-buy to us with this Eddie vs Justin battle.
