Several American Top Team teammates weren’t happy about Colby Covington’s post-fight interview after his UFC Fight Night 119 win over Demian Maia on Saturday.
Welterweight contender Colby Covington didn’t just anger the Sao Paulo crowd when he called Brazil “a dump” and its inhabitants “filthy animals” after his UFC Fight Night 119 win over Demian Maia.
He also upset some of his teammates at southern Florida’s American Top Team, including UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes — a Brazilian — coach Din Thomas, and former UFC title challenger Antonio Silva.

UFC champion Tyron Woodley, who happens to reign over Covington’s division, added his two cents on his fellow American Top Team fighter’s performance over the jiu-jitsu ace. Woodley is still officially part of the American Top Team roster, but usually trains at a separate branch in St. Louis or at Milwaukee’s Roufusport.

Covington defeated Maia by unanimous decision in the evening’s co-main event. Maia outpointed the wrestler on the feet in the opening round, but Covington opened up more in the latter two rounds after Maia started to tire. Covington stuffed all of Maia’s many takedown attempts and never was in a bad position on the mat.
After the biggest victory of his career, Covington angered and insulted the crowd in his post-fight speech, and then called out the 170-pound titleholder, Woodley. The Brazilian fans threw trash at him and extra security was required at the fighter hotel afterwards.
Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 119 was headlined by a middleweight bout between Derek Brunson and the returning Lyoto Machida. Brunson won by first-round knockout.
