Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

The headline is a lie. I can’t possibly cover everything wrong with the above self defense video from Business Insider. But I can get a running start, and let me tell you, none of the advice is good. It is, in fact, extremely irresponsible for Business Insider, their “expert” Gabrielle Rubin, or anyone at all, to post a video this bad, on a subject as serious as real-world violence. If women follow this advice, they could suffer awful consequences.

Firstly, let’s start with her advice not to fight the hand around the neck, in what she incorrectly calls a chokehold. She gets something right here: You don’t want to fight the forearm in an actual choke attempt. But you also just can’t ignore a choke around your neck. The demonstrator is just loosely clasping her hand in a sort of headlock. An actual choke can put you unconscious in seconds. The key here is to fight the wrist or hand (not the forearm), or even better, the other hand, keeping one crucial priority in mind: Make sure the hands don’t connect. If someone is going for a choke, chances are, they are going to want to connect their grip together, either grabbing their opposite bicep for a rear-naked choke, or clasping their hands for a short choke. Either one is a bad scenario.

Secondly, she advises elbowing the attacker in the side… and only manages to connect on the hip bone. That is going to stop exactly zero serious attacks. The focus needs to be on changing the position, pivoting out from the choke. Bas Rutten has actual practical advice below; he suggests stepping out to the side and either picking up the attacker by the legs, or tripping them to the ground. Foot stomping is ineffectual, you absolutely do NOT want to lift your chin in any choke scenario, exposing your neck, and… kicking your own butt?? Seriously??

Lastly, she actually says “you don’t need to run”, which is the worst advice of the video. Yes, if someone is assaulting you on the street, you absolutely should run at the very first opening you get. That’s the most basic advice any self defense class starts with. Get out as safely and quickly as possible.

Just watch someone who has actually been in a physical altercation once in his life give you ideas that stand any chance at all of working:

Insomnia

The craziest headline today by far was the one where Conor McGregor is in danger after getting into a bar fight with a mobster’s father.

Derek Brunson and Jacare are going to fight, but they have fought before, which I hadn’t realized. Here’s what happened the first time.

A man says the police choked him until he pooped himself because he tried to pay a fine with pennies, and nothing about that headline isn’t funny to me. (Even though it was reportedly only a ten dollar fine, so the violence was not at all warranted)

And the cow jumped over the… sort of jumped over the… flopped over the… fence.
