Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje is not only official, but it’s going to be scheduled for five rounds.
A few days after it was reported that the UFC was working on booking lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje for a March or April event, the promotion announced that the fight is now official for April 14th at a venue to be determined. Not only is it going to be airing on FOX, it will serve as a five-round main event.
Poirier (22-5-1 NC) is coming off an impressive third-round win over former WEC and UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis. His preceding two fights saw him beat Jim Miller by decision in UFC 208’s Fight of the Night, followed by a no-contest vs. Eddie Alvarez at UFC 211 after Alvarez illegally kneed him in the head while he was downed.
Gaethje (18-1) made his UFC debut in 2017, predictably engaging in Fight of the Night thrillers in both of his Octagon appearances. He rallied to stop Michael Johnson in July, but was stopped in the final minute of his enthralling fight with Eddie Alvarez at UFC 218.
A welterweight bout between Carlos Condit and Matt Brown is also expected to be on this card, making UFC on FOX 29 an absolute must-watch event.
