Check out our breakdown of the post-fight bonuses from UFC on FOX 27: Jacare vs. Brunson 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina was home to another underwhelming night of fights, with four (T)KOs, one submission and seven decisions, including two split-decisions. This card was poor on paper and the fights themselves didn’t do a whole lot to buck that label. No wonder Fox refused to meet the UFC’s fee demands.
Performances of the Night:
Mirsad Bektic channeled Ray Longo and punched a hole in Godofredo Pepey’s chest. Bektic loaded up a punch like he was about to throw a fireball and BAM, launched his hand right into the solar plexus of Pepey. Godofredo reacted like a cartoon character who doesn’t realize he’s running in mid-air; for a split-second everything was fine, then the universe came crashing down on Pepey and it all landed square on his breadbasket, squeezing the air out of his lungs like some sort of human-sized whoopee cushion.
The Brazilian went down, Bektic moved to finish him with some perfunctory shots on the ground, and the referee mercifully waved it off as Pepey writhed in pain. Bektic received $50,000 for being one of the few bright spots on a card filled with dullness.
Jacare Souza fought the perfect fight against Derek Brunson. The perfect fight against Derek Brunson is to just do nothing until he inevitably over-extends himself, then bop him. Jacare’s chosen form of bopping was a beautiful high kick that put Brunson on a wobbly rickshaw down Queer street. Jacare chased the stumbling Brunson down with punches and put him away for good, earning himself $50K for his troubles.
Fight of the Night:
Drew Dober and Frank Camacho had a damn good fight on a card full of mediocrity, bringing back-and-forth action, knockdowns, and basically everything you could ask for except a finish. The razor-close fight went all fifteen minutes, but at least it was fifteen minutes full of ass-kicking action. Both men deservedly got an extra 50 Gs in their paychecks for putting on a clinic of violence.
