Welterweight contender Leon Edwards will get a step up in competition, as he’ll be fighting Donald Cerrone in June.
Following a fifth successive win, British welterweight Leon Edwards is set for the biggest fight of his career, and it will double as his first UFC main event slot.
MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported on Tuesday that a matchup between Edwards and Donald Cerrone will take place on June 23rd in Singapore. An official announcement is expected to be made shortly, presumably on Friday’s “25th Anniversary” press conference.
Cerrone (33-10, 1 NC) is coming off a first-round TKO of Yancy Medeiros in February’s UFC Austin main event. That much-needed result snapped his three-fight losing streak, which included TKO defeats to Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal, as well as a close decision loss to Robbie Lawler.
Edwards (15-3) earned a literal last-second TKO victory over Peter Sobotta at last month’s UFC London, and called for a fight with Till in the post-fight interview, but Till will instead face Stephen Thompson. In addition to getting past Sobotta, “Rocky” has beaten Dominic Waters, Albert Tumenov, Vicente Luque, and Bryan Barberena during his winning streak.
The entire UFC Fight Night: Singapore card is expected to stream live on UFC Fight Pass.
