Robert Whittaker fought for a long time with a broken thumb.
Robert Whittaker didn’t just survive the punishing striking of Yoel Romero to come out of UFC 225 with a win. He also had to survive a hand injury as well. Like his first fight with Romero, Whittaker got injured in the first round of his bout but managed to gut out a win. The first time it was his knee. This time, he apparently broke his thumb.
His team released an x-ray of the injury on social media in the aftermath of the event:
They also released some raw footage of him heading to the hospital in an ambulance to get the x-ray before that:
Whittaker (20-4, 11-2 UFC) edged out a split decision win in a bout where he was badly hurt by Romero multiple times. Whittaker’s UFC middleweight title was not on the line at UFC 225 due to Romero’s inability to make weight, but it was still one of the best fights of 2018 thus far.
It’s unclear how long Whittaker will be out of action with the injury at this point.
