UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has made history by becoming the second fighter to simultaneously hold two UFC titles.
International Fight Week has always been memorable year in and year out, and 2018 did not disappoint with its headliner fight at UFC 226. UFC champions Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier were matched up against each other to determine who would be crowned as the baddest man on the planet.
What was the high point of the fight?
Unlike the fight that preceded it, both Miocic and Cormier fought mostly within boxing and clinch range. Miocic’s size advantage was evident, but Cormier, like usual, was able to make the necessary adjustments.
In the latter part of the first round, it was Cormier who was landing more punches and getting clinch. Eventually, he found a home for one of his punches at close range, as a hard right hook landed on Miocic, dropping him instantly. Cormier followed up with a few more punches until referee Marc Goddard stepped in to stop the action.
Where do these two go from here?
Cormier has been loudly stating his intentions to fight former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, and he may have just gotten his wish. It will, however, depend on Lesnar’s USADA case stemming as far back as 2016, which has put his career on hold.
Miocic is still very much a formidable top contender at the UFC’s heavyweight division, but it may take a while before he can fight for the title again. For the time being, I would like to see him face someone like Curtis Blaydes, whom Miocic can put his wrestling skills to the test with.
Watch it now, later or never?
It was an action-packed fight for the entire 4:38 minutes, capped off with an emphatic finish. You would want to watch this as soon as possible.
