Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight …
Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo spent a lot of time together on promotional duties, including an entire world tour, ahead of two scheduled fights, and then just an infamous 13 seconds together in the Octagon, with McGregor handing Aldo his first defeat in 18 fights over 9 years. Despite the pre-fight animosity McGregor calculatingly built in that time, he was genuinely happy to see his old rival win last weekend against Jeremy Stephens. Transcript via MMAJunkie.com:
“I was so happy for him,” McGregor said. “Honestly, truly happy to see the joy he had after it. It’s a crazy business, and I know he’s gone through a lot of stuff. So to see him come back with that great finish, I was very happy for him and his coach, Andre Pederneiras. The whole of Ireland was happy for Jose Aldo that night.”

Insomnia
Fitting that Cody Garbrandt’s hot-mic moment is just annoyance at the press.
“Whoever is asking these questions suck.” – Cody Garbrandt whispers on the conference call thinking no one heard. #UFC227

This is a weird UFC sponsor, but it makes sense.

Darren Till is not about to share the stage with Colby Covington
If I’m Colby Covington I’m rolling into UFC 228 fight week in Dallas, Texas – with or without an official invite – the UFC interim belt sitting on his shoulder and set up his own media interviews / opportunities.

Urijah Faber is probably the best actor in this picture and he’s not even in it.

Joe Rogan posts some cool videos sometimes:
Quick Hits and Good Reads
- Cody Garbrandt is 100 percent right that UFC fighters are extremely underpaid relative to other, non-combat sport athletes. Best estimates put their share of the gross revenue at 17%, compared to 30-50% for mainstream sports. While there is no moral case for WME-IMG to make hundreds of millions while paying their athletes barely a living wage to get long-term brain damage, that’s also just the state of modern capitalism. The best hope in the current world for this to improve even a little bit would be collective bargaining for the fighters- hopefully Garbrandt signed his Project Spearhead card.
- Khabib’s manager maybe isn’t doing the sharpest negotiation here.
