The Theseus Paradox that is UFC Fight Night 137 staggers into Sao Paulo, Brazil, this Saturday evening (Sept. 22, 2018) with a Frankenstein’d main event that pits rising prospect Eryk Anders against brutal striker Thiago “Marreta” Santos. The FOX Sports 1-televised co-main sees Carlo Pedersoli Jr. step in for Neil Magny against Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira, while Sam Alvey welcomes “Minotouro” Nogueira back to the Octagon for the first time since 2016.
We’ve got the year’s biggest pay-per-view (PPV) creeping up on us, so let’s see if we can’t rustle up some funds to afford it.
What Went Wrong at UFC Moscow?
Nothing! Got away clean thanks to me chickening out of betting on C.B. Dollaway.
UFC Fight Night 137 Odds For The Undercard:
Charles Oliveira (-370) vs. Christos Giagos (+310)
Francisco Trinaldo (-250) vs. Evan Dunham (+210)
Ryan Spann (-190) vs. Luis Henrique (+165)
Augusto Sakai (-255) vs. Chase Sherman (+215)
Sergio Moraes (-280) vs. Ben Saunders (+240)
Gillian Robertson (-130) vs. Mayra Bueno Silva (+110)
Hector Lombard (-130) vs. Thales Leites (+110)
Elizeu Zaleski (-650) vs. Luigi Vendramini (+475)
Livia Renata Souza (-1200) vs. Alex Chambers (-775)
Thoughts: In this mass of debutants, late-notice replacements, and horribly inconsistent veterans, one line stands out: Ben Saunders as a massive underdog against Sergio Moraes.
Moraes is fun to watch and incredibly skilled on the mat, but his wrestling is so poor that he’s basically just a hyper-aggressive brawler. In addition, a not-inconsiderable portion of mixed martial arts (MMA) media has scored against him in all but one of his wins since 2013. He’s also coming off a robbery against a tall, rangy striker in Tim Means, an archetype Saunders fits nicely. Though “Killa B” is well past his best, he’s too good to be a two-to-one underdog against a guy he’s three inches taller than and has almost half a foot of reach on.
A bit on Evan Dunham seems wise, as well. Francisco Trinaldo just turned 40 and has trouble maintaining his output for 15 minutes, so a pressure cooker like Dunham — who claims this is his last fight ever — poses a legit threat.
UFC Fight Night 137 Odds For The Main Card:
Thiago Santos (-165) vs. Eryk Anders (+145)
Alex Oliveira (-420) vs. Carlo Pedersoli Jr. (+335)
Sam Alvey (-325) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (+265)
Renan Barao (-135) vs. Andre Ewell (+115)
Marina Rodriguez (-115) vs. Randa Markos (-105)
Thoughts: Two fighters making their Octagon debuts, three late replacements, and a 42-year-old Light Heavyweight making his first appearance in nearly two years. Nah … leave well enough alone.
UFC Fight Night 137 Best Bets:
