TUF 28 Results, Recap For Ep. 8

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back on FOX Sports 1 last night (Weds., Oct. 31, 2018) with episode eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 28, featuring a split cast of men’s heavyweights and women’s featherweights. Last week’s episode featured Team Whittaker’s Juan Espino scoring a unanimous decision win over Team Gastelum’s Ben Sosoli, much to the chagrin of heavyweight power drinker, Maurice Green, who despises the Spaniard for reasons not quite understood.

Whatever.

We kick things off with Coach Gastelum talking up Macy Chiasson, who fights Larissa Pacheco for the remaining women’s quarterfinal spot. She bills herself as a dynamic “new school” fighter who is going to overwhelm her opponents. Chiasson expects to be pushed against the cage once Pacheco feels her power because that’s what all her opponents do. All two of them, I guess, since she only has two professional fights. She’s from New Orleans and grew up near the famous cemeteries and considers it to be a “special place” in her heart. Every Sunday her family, sometimes as large as 20-30 people, gets together for food and fun. They all appear to be very close.

Pacheco is another non-English speaking contestant so we get her backstory with subtitles. She lives on the island of Gigoia in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a place that is no stranger to mixed martial arts (MMA). She currently trains at Tata Fight Team (TFT), former home to UFC welterweight Alex Oliveira, among others. Coach Whittaker is confident in her skill set, as well as her toughness, based on her two fights in UFC prior to her TUF experience, which came against former champion Germaine de Randamie and ex-title contender Jessica Andrade when she was just 20 years old.

Pacheco needs to visit the UFC Performance Institute to help with her weight cut, which appears to be on the brutal side. She is able to make the 146-pound mark but it does not come easy and she looks terrible on the scale. Chiasson clocks in at the same mark and is fresh as a daisy. They exchange mean mugs and the fight is official.

Back at the TUF house, Maurice Greene starts drinking … again … and begins acting “scary,” according to Bea Malecki, and growling like a “wild animal.” There is some concern about what he might do under the influence because his personality “changes.” He gets some heat for it the next morning because the people who are actually fighting want to sleep and not being up all night listening to his stupidness. Later in the episode, he starts up again with Justin Frazier and Anderson Da Silva at the pool table.

145 lbs.: Team Whittaker’s Larissa Pacheco (11-2) vs. Team Gastelum’s Macy Chiasson (2-0)

Round 1: Quick touch of gloves and they immediately clinch and trade knees. Chiasson backs away but Pacheco rushes her and they go to the fence. Chiasson breaks free and they go back to striking. Pacheco puts her back into the wall. Takedown attempt is denied so Pacheco adjusts her hips and goes for a second throw. This one is successful but Chiasson is too big and too fresh to stay grounded. She then clinches and gets a takedown of her own. Chiasson takes a coffee break then postures up for some ground-and-pound. Pacheco rolls and gives up her back. Chiasson jumps in for the rear-naked choke and flattens her out. She rains down punches and Pacheco is not improving her position, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Final result: Chiasson def. Pacheco by technical knockout

Dana White sits down with Whittaker and Gastelum to make the quarterfinal match ups. Since both coaches like each other, it’s a fairly easy process. Greene gets asked to act professional in the presence of White.
