Junior Dos Santos overcame a tough first round to pick up a second round TKO victory over Tai Tuivasa in the main event of UFC Adelaide.
In the main event of UFC Adelaide, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos came back from a tough first round to pick up a second-round TKO victory over Tai Tuivasa, handing him his first career loss.
What was the high point of the fight?
Tuivasa pressured Dos Santos early, backing him up against the fence and throwing some heavy low kicks. The Australian landed a heavy elbow and an uppercut inside the clinch to top off a good first round.
A right hand from ‘JDS’ rocked Tuivasa as he stepped in, and it set up the left hand from the Brazilian that sent Tuivasa to the canvas. Unable to intelligently defend himself once mounted, Dos Santos reigned down some heavy punches and referee Herb Dean stopped the fight midway through the second round.
Where do these two go from here?
For the first time in almost seven years, dos Santos has won consecutive fights in his UFC career. The win over Tuivasa was huge for ‘JDS’, as it reinserts the former champion back into the mix at heavyweight. Dos Santos called out Alistair Overeem for a rematch after the fight, they originally fought in December 2015 when Overeem won by second round TKO.
The loss is the first of Tuivasa’s MMA career, and the Australian was clearly frustrated with himself after the fight. Improvements are to be made from ‘Bam Bam’, as the 25-year-old did seem to struggle when he found himself on his back. A fight with Tuivasa and Justin Willis makes sense given Tuivasa called him out in the octagon after their scuffle at the weigh-ins earlier this week.
Watch it now, later or never?
