Brian Ortega’s injuries aren’t surprising to anyone who watched UFC 231, but he’ll probably be on the shelf for a while.
UFC 231 was a violent event. The latest of the promotion’s big shows took place in Toronto, and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has released the medical suspensions from it. Only two fighters were handed long terms, but one of them was the fighter that came up short in the biggest bout of the evening – Brian Ortega.
Ortega, who was attempting to wrest the UFC featherweight title away from Max Holloway, was stopped by doctors at the end of the fourth round due to severe swelling around his eye. He stated later on that he had broken his nose and his thumb in the fight, where Holloway had landed a record number of strikes on him in fourth stanza.
As a result, he could be on the shelf for up to 180 days. Undercard fighter Chad Laprise was given a similar suspension.
