Before Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson go to war for the second time at the upcoming UFC 232 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Dec. 29, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, take a trip down memory lane to see their first encounter.
Five years ago at UFC 165, Jones stepped into the cage with five consecutive and dominant title defenses after emphatically dethroning Mauricio Rua for the Light Heavyweight title. Little did he know that “The Mauler” was going to take him deeper in a fight than he’s ever been.
Throughout the five rounds of action, both men had their shining moments in the standup department, though “The Mauler” scored he first-ever takedown on “Bones.” After 25 minutes of action, fight fans around the globe were treated to one of the best championship fights ever, with Jones walking away with a unanimous decision win.
Five years later, the two men will once again tango inside the Octagon for the right to be named the new 205-pound champion at the expense of Daniel Cormier giving up his champ-champ status.
Whether or not the rematch lives up to the expectation fights fans have been waiting for, remains to be seen. But we can still expect to see both men put it all on the line because despite the fact that so much time has passed in between fights, they still don’t care much for one another.
