Cris Cyborg releases statement after UFC 232 title loss

Cris Cyborg is staying humble after her stunning title loss at UFC 232.

Cyborg, who fell to Amanda Nunes in 51 seconds to lose the UFC women’s featherweight title on Saturday night, released a statement on Twitter early Sunday morning. The fight vs. Nunes was the co-main event of UFC 232, which took place at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

“Today was not our day, but I want you to know that I am very grateful for your affection!” Cyborg wrote. “Life is like that one day we lose and one day we win!”

Cyborg won the women’s featherweight title with a TKO of Tonya Evinger in July 2017, and defended it twice against former bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Yana Kunitskaya. Cyborg has long been considered the most feared and dangerous female fighter on the planet.

She was a sizable betting favorite heading into the Nunes matchup, but Nunes was the faster and more precise fighter in the cage. She became the first female UFC fighter to hold two titles at the same time. Nunes entered the bout as the bantamweight champion.

“Belt for me has always been symbolic, the most important is to be a champion in the lives of people making a difference in this world!” Cyborg wrote.

UFC 232 also featured a rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. Jones defeated “The Mauler” for the second time with a third-round TKO, re-claiming the light heavyweight title.
