Marlon Moraes picked up a first round submission win against Raphael Assuncao in their rematch at UFC Fortaleza.
Marlon Moraes made quick work of Raphael Assuncao in the main event of UFC Fortaleza, submitting him by guillotine choke in the first round of their rematch,
What was the high point of the fight?
Both men opened up exchanging strikes on the feet, but it was Moraes who would land the first big exchange of the fight. “Magic” unleashed two big right hands mid way through the first round that dropped Assuncao.
Following up with some good ground and pound from half-guard, Moraes locked on to a guillotine choke, and after rolling into a mounted position whilst still latching on to the submission, Assuncao was forced to tap.
Where do these two go from here?
Speaking in the octagon after the fight, Moraes said he almost pulled out of the fight with bad diarrhoea during fight week. With Cody Garbrandt being scheduled to face Pedro Munhoz next month, and Dominick Cruz most likely being sidelined for another year, nothing else makes sense for Moraes other then a title fight against current champion T.J. Dillashaw.
The loss snaps Assuncao’s four-fight winning streak and is just his third during his current UFC stint. With a win over Moraes, Assuncao could have secured himself a trilogy fight with Dillashaw, but he will now have to tally up a few more wins before getting a shot at 135-pound gold.
