Dana White has said a fight between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone isn’t close to happening.
Despite both fighters showing interest in facing each other, Dana White has stated a fight between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone is nowhere near close to happening.
Both fighters have exchanged words in the past, most infamously at the UFC’s ‘Go Big’ press conference in 2015. However it was after Cerrone’s most recent win against Alexander Hernandez at UFC Brooklyn last month that McGregor posted a tweet saying he would fight ‘Cowboy.’
It didn’t take long for Cerrone to reply to McGregor’s message, posting a picture on his Instagram account showing his interest in the fight. Talks have since broken down though according to the UFC president White, as he addressed the potential fight at the UFC 236 press conference last Friday.
“Listen, these two have been talking about this and I said if they want to fight I would do it,” White said at the UFC 236 press conference (via MMA Fighting). “But we’re nowhere close to a fight. We’re actually looking at other opponents for ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone now.”
McGregor is currently sitting at the number four slot in the UFC lightweight rankings, and last fought in November last year when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Meanwhile Cerrone’s successful return to 155-pounds last month took him to ninth at lightweight.
