Dustin Poirier worries UFC may lose their less tech-savvy viewers once they move their pay-per-views to ESPN+.
Dustin Poirier wonders how his father-in-law is going to watch him fight Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 236.
UFC 236 will be the first pay-per-view event under the promotion’s new exclusive deal with ESPN+. Poirier images the UFC is making the best decision for business, but he is unsure how it might affect viewers who are not-so-tech savvy.
“I guess time will tell,” Poirier told MMAjunkie. “Any kinks they have, any problems they have, they’ll fix them because they want to make as much money as possible. So whatever problems come up they’re going to get it fixed.”
“But for me I can see problems like with people in Louisiana, like my father-in-law. These guys don’t have smart TVs and stuff like that,” he continued. “They’re not buying the app and signing up for ESPN+. It’s complicated for them. I don’t know what they’re going to do, but I’m sure they’ll figure it out.”
In the United States, ESPN+ is the only provider for UFC pay-per-view events, requiring purchasers to subscribe first to the ESPN+ streaming service before ordering the $60 PPV.
UFC 236 takes place April 13 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Follow along with Bloody Elbow for live highlights, results and updates on all the action.
