Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) makes its return to Russia this weekend (Sat., April 20, 2019) with the UFC Fight Night 149 on ESPN+, which will take place inside Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg. At the top of the card, former Heavyweight title contender, Alistair Overeem, tries to get back into the 265-pound title chase at the expense of Ukrainian submission specialist, Aleksei Oleinik. In the UFC Saint Petersburg co-main event, Russian sambo stylist, Islam Makhachev, takes on fellow countryman, Arman Tsarukyan, in Lightweight action. In addition, Brazilian Heavyweight, Marcelo Golm, takes on another local favorite, Sergei Pavlovich, in main card action.

265 lbs.: Alistair Overeem vs. Aleksei Oleinik

Round one: Oleinik immediately pulls guard. Overeem lets him up, looks for a head kick. Overeem looking to catch him with knees, lands a couple. Overhand right stings Overeem! Oleinik opening up on the fence a minute in. Overeem survives, then blasts Oleinik with a knee. Oleinik slamming home rights to the body. More knees from Alistair when they separate. Oleinik backs him to the fence again, whacks him with right hands and changes levels. Overeem gets double underhooks and avoids an Ezekiel setup. More body work by Oleinik. BIG knees form Overeem on the fence. Oleinik still digging to the body. Knee from Oleinik on the break. Two minutes to go.

More knees by Overeem. Even more, plus a couple switch knees. Oleinik backs him to the fence again and lands short right hands. One minute to go. More huge knees by Overeem and down goes Oleinik. Oleinik rolls to his knees and Overeem cracks him with punches and elbows until he covers up.

155 lbs.: Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan

Round one: Both men looking to kick early. Tsarukyan slips and Makhachev uses the opportunity to shoot. Tsarukyan defends, looks for a single-leg. Good balance from Makhachev a minute in. He puts Tsarukyan on the fence. Knee from Tsarukyan. Lovely foot sweep from Makhachev into mount. Tsarukyan uses butterfly hooks to gets to his feet, Makhachev attached to the front headlock. He pulls guard on a guillotine, loses it and now it’s Tsarukyan looking for his own guillotine. Loses it two minutes in.

Tsarukyan looks for an elbow. Makhachev fires a knee that Tsarukyan catches. Tsarukyan going hard for the takedown, Makhachev defending well. Tsarukyan is relentless. One minute to go. They’re face-to-face in the clinch again. Separation. Tsarukyan ducks a big left hand and looks for a single-leg. Close round. 10-9 Makhachev?

Round two: Makhachev tries a head kick. Tsarukyan shoots, sprawled on. One minute in. Makhachev tries to snap him down and eats a right on the break. Tsarukyan looks for his own head kick. He shoots again, denied with an underhook. Knee and body punches from Makhachev. Trading knees in the clinch. Another foot sweep into a single-leg attempt, can’t quite run the pipe. Tsarukyan looking for a kimura as Makhachev puts him on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Round three: Tsarukyan looking aggressive, eats a counter left. Combination from Tsarukyan, who ducks into a head kick. One minute in. Tsarukyan with a 1-2 downstairs and he shoots. Makhachev sprawls, looks for a cradle. Tsarukyan continues to drive for a single-leg. Makhachev gets out and puts him on the fence. Two minutes in. Round one: Low kick from Shevchenko. Modafferi falling short with her shots. One minute in. Nice counters by Shevchenko. Good straight left. Counter jabs by Shevchenko as Modafferi works her way in. Two minutes in. Shevchenko leg kick, circles away from punches. Another straight left. Modafferi with a couple right hands as she chases. Another right hand. Two minutes to go.

Modafferi muscles her way into the clinch. She gets Shevchenko to her seat. One minute to go. Full takedown, nearly into mount. Short shots from Modafferi. 10-9 Modafferi.

Round two: Shevchenko spends the first minute picking Modafferi apart at range. Constant left hands. Modafferi again powers her way into the clinch, looking for takedowns. She gets Shevchenko down despite the latter having a whizzer. Modafferi on top in half guard. Two minutes to go.

Shevchenko looks to kick her away. Modafferi comes back down into half guard. Shevchenko with some hammerfists off her back. Modafferi working her way to mount, Shevchenko regains half guard. Punches by Modafferi. 10-9 Modafferi.

Round three: My feed dies early as Shevchenko is piecing her up, then comes back with Modafferi looking for the back. One minute in. One hook in, but Shevchenko sweeps into guard. Modafferi threatens an armbar, then hits her own sweep into mount two minutes in. Elbow from Modafferi. More punches. Two minutes to go.

Shevchenko sweeps again. Modafferi makes it to her feet.Good knees by Shevchenko. Modafferi takes her to the fence. One minute to go. Shevchenko with a knee, gets taken down via high crotch. 10-9 Modafferi.

185 lbs.: Alen Amedovski vs. Krzysztof Jotko

Round one: Jotko flicking out kicks to start. Counter hook from Amedovski. One minute in. Check hook by Jotko. Body kick and takedown attempt, which starts ugly but ends up with Jotko on top in half guard. Amedovski tries to muscle his way to his feet, gives up his back, then rolls into guard. He drops some good shots bsfore separating. Jotko steps in a with a spinning elbow that briefly wobbles Amedovski. He follows up with a hard right hook and a takedown into side control with two minutes to go.

Jotko looks for the back, Amedovski regains half guard. Jotko postures up for some heavier blows. 10-9 Jotko.

Round two: Jotko pressuring, tries a straight left. One minute in. Left hand lands for Amedovski. Jotko hits a nice outside reap into side control. Two minutes in. Jotko with some short elbows. He briefly gets the crucifix. Two minutes to go.

More short blows. One minute to go. Crucifix again. Right hands piling up for Jotko as Amedovski tries desperately to bridge. Elbows too. 10-8 Jotko.

Round three: Jotko circling on the outside. Head kick attempt. Lead left a minute in. Jotko shoots, completes another takedown into guard. Good elbow. Two minutes in. More ground-and-pound piling up. Two minutes to go.

Jotko eventually works his way back to side control. More elbows. Amedovski gets back to his feet and Jotko raises his hands.10-9 Jotko.

Final result: Jotko def. Amedovski by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Movsar Evloev vs. Seung Woo Choi

Round one: Choi throwing heat early, lands a teep and leg kick. Evloev fires a lead uppercut and gets clipped by a counter right a minute in. Knee from Choi. Evloev overhand right in return. Choi pops him with a jab. Evloev shoots, drags Choi to the mat and quickly moves to side control. Two minutes in. Knees to the body. Choi regains guard. Two minutes to go.

Short right hands by Evloev. Choi tries to roll free, early gives up his back but manages to maintain guard. One minute to go. Choi rolls again, eats a knee on the way up. Right hands from Evloev, more knees. He takes Choi down, eats a knee, drags him down for more punches. 10-9 Evloev.

Round two: Choi bounces punches off Evloev’s guard. Both whiff on punches, but Evloev gets Choi off-balance enough to shoot. Right hands from Evloev and some chain wrestling. One minute in. Good knee from Choi, but he gets taken down for it. Evloev looking for the back, kicks off the cage to look for a hook. Two minutes in. Choi unloads some elbows to the back of the head but gets taken down into guard before he can be penalized for it. Two minutes to go.

Choi looks for a triangle, Evloev looks for the back. Evloev winds up losing a point for illegal knees and they restart on the feet. Choi firing head kicks. Evloev tries to spin, nearly gets head kicked. One minute to go. Evloev gets in on a takedown. Legal knee this time. Choi looking to counter the takedown with his own knees. 9-9 with the point deduction.

Round three: Evloev hits another takedown into guard right off the bat. Choi gets to his knees and gets to the fence, but can’t dislodge the Russian. He gets a moment of separation off a failed throw, can’t maintain it. Two minutes in. Short right from Evloev. Choi lands a knee downstairs. Evloev still chipping away with right hands against the cage. Two minutes to go.

Choi manages to limp-leg out. Evloev looks to spin, then gets in on a takedown when Choi tries to do the same. One minute to go. Choi doing a good job of staying on his knees or feet, but gets slammed. He pops up, takes more short punches. 10-9 Evloev.

Final result: Evloev def. Choi by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Sultan Aliev vs. Keita Nakamura

Round one: Nakamura tries a head kick. Aliev knocks his mouthpiece out with a jab. They trade lefts. One minute in. Nakamura with a counter knee. Aliev wobbles him with a 2-3. Nakamura body kick blocked, then both land hard right hands. Two minutes in. Nakamura tries another body kick and Aliev suddenly starts blasting him with right hands and a slam. Nakamura hits a trip, can’t maintain top position. Two minutes to go.

Aliev brings him down with a double-leg, lands right hands on the way up. Nakamura gets double underhooks and reverses. One minute to go. Big uppercuts on the break from Aliev, who shoots again. 10-9 Aliev.

Round two: Low kick from Nakamura. Lead rights from Aliev. Nakamura low kick. One minute in. Overhand right by Aliev. Nakamura low kick. They trade body shots. Two minutes in. Aliev pops him with a jab and overhand right, takes a couple from Nakamura and ties up. He tries to spin on the break. Two minutes to go.

Straight left and leg kick by Nakamura. Aliev looks for a single-leg, slams him down form the rear waist lock. One minute to go. Good right hand by Aliev. Elbows by Nakamura in return. Nakamura gets to his feet, still tied up. 10-9 Aliev.

Round three: Back to picking at each other at range. One minute in. Right hook lands for Nakamura. Jab exchange. Aliev shoots, gets Nakamura to his seat. Two minutes in. Aliev staying heavy, looking for the back. No-hooks RNC attempt, can’t get it. Nakamura escapes and looks for a takedown, can’t get it and has to defend another. Two minutes to go.

Nakamura separates with an underhook. Aliev body shot. Nakmura stuffs a takedown, eats a jab and glancing overhand. Right hook from Nakamura with a minute to go. Head kick by Nakamura nearly catches Aliev leaning. Straight right knocks Nakamura back. 10-9 Aliev.

155 lbs.: Alex da Silva vs. Alexander Yakovlev

Round one: Yakovlev lands a body kick, avoids the follow-up punches. da Silva aggressive early, cracks him with a 1-2. Yakovlev ties up and puts him on the fence. One minute in. He lands a knee before da Silva separates. Left straight to uppercut, neither lands clean. Nicely timed takdeown from Yakovlev, but da Silva stuffs it with a whizzer and slams Yakovlev to the mat. Two minutes in. da Silva on top in side control. Yakovlev rolls to his knees, rolls into guard and looks for a takedown when da Silva takes the back. Two minutes to go.

Elbows from da Silva as he defends the single-leg. He looks for his own takedown once again. One minute to go. Browne elbows by Yakovlev. He reverses position. da Silva looks for a double-leg, can’t get it. 10-9 da Silva.

Round two: Yakovlev slips on a high kick and eats a punch as da Silva takes top position. Yakovlev looking to kick him off, nearly gives up mount. Yakovlev rolls to his knees and looks for a takedown. One minute in. da Silva gets the front headlock and sprawls, but gets slammed for his guillotine attempt. da Silva scrambles through for a double-leg attempt. Yakovlev still defending. Yakovlev continues sprawling and puts on a squeeze that draws a tap. Looks like a Schultz headlock.

Round one: Lead right from Abdurakhimov to start. Body shot. 2-3. Uppercut in the center, gets clipped by a counter right. One minute in. Abdurakhimov low kick and body jab. Quick exchange in the center. Tybura pops him with a jab. Heavy counter right by Abdurakhimov. Up-jab comes back at him and Tybura trips him up with a low kick. Two minutes in. Abdurakhimov landing most of the clean punches so far, continues to find the mark with the lead right. Hard clinch uppercuts. Two minutes to go.

1-2 lands for Abdurakhimov. Two more rights. Tybura lands a body kick that may have strayed low. One minute to go. Counter right by Abdurakhimov. Spinning back fist attempt. Short right by Tybura, lead right by Abdurakhimov. 10-9 Abdurakhimov.

Round two: Abdurakhimov lands a spinning back kick early. Brief clinch attempt. Tybura body kick met by some right hands. One minute in. Tybura nearly catches him with a head kick, then stuffs a takedown. Abdurakhimov with a right to the body. Good clinch uppercuts. Tybura stuffs a takedown two minutes in. Abdurakhimov with a glancing spinning back fist, claims a low blow but ref doesn’t see it. Tybura fires a head kick and denies another takedown. Abdurakhimov lands a right downstairs. Lead hook takes out Tybura’s legs and Abdurakhimov clobbers him against the fence until the ref comes in.

205 lbs.: Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk

Round one: Antigulov clips him with a series of right hands, fails on a low single. Another right hand and another, but Oleksiejczuk levels him with a counter left. Antigulov still charging after him. Another uppercut drops him, then a third and Oleksiejczuk pounds him out.

Final result: Oleksiejczuk def. Antigulov by KO (punches)


155 lbs.: Rafael Fiziev vs. Magomed Mustafaev

Round one: Fiziev switching stance. Wheel kick clips him, he survives. Low kick by Mustafaev. Another. One minute in. He checks a leg kick from Fiziev, then wipes him out with a spinning back kick to the face. A few more punches and the ref steps in.

Final result: Mustafaev def. Fiziev by TKO (spinning back kick and punches)
