“She’s been moving her hands, opening her eyes, wiggling her toes. So everybody’s hopeful about her health status.”
Earlier this week it was reported that former UFC strawweight Angela Magana fell into a coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a spinal injury at University Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Magana, who said she thought she was going to die just moments before her operation, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and slipped into a coma while under anaesthesia.
“She’s in a coma, and we’re waiting to hear some positive news,” Magana’s coach Gabriel Lamastus told MMA Junkie earlier this week. “The surgery went fine. The problem was anesthesia. It’s very rare that patients react bad to anesthesia, but it does happen, and I guess this is one of those rare cases. But I’m being positive. She’ll be fine, and she’ll wake up. She’s a hard worker. Angela is a very, very hard worker. A lot of people only know the Angela from social media. They don’t really know the real Angela. That woman busts her tail to provide for her family.”
The good news is, it looks like Magana is going to be okay, as coach Lamastus said the 35-year-old, mother of three is showing positive signs of recovery.

“She had a nerve block and she went from that to surge,” he said (transcript via Sherdog). “The surgery went perfectly fine. But the anesthesia gave her a bad reaction. So she didn’t wake up from the anesthesia, which is something very rare. That’s where we’re at right now. She hasn’t wake up. the doctors are trying to reverse the medication and see if she’s responsive to it. “She’s been moving her hands, opening her eyes, wiggling her toes. So everybody’s hopeful about her health status.”
