Dustin Poirier hints that he will take on Khabib Nurmagomedov for the official UFC lightweight title in September.
Maybe UFC interim titles do matter, after all.
Newly-crowned interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier, who beat reigning featherweight champ Max Holloway via decision last weekend at UFC 236, has teased that he will take on Khabib Nurmagomedov in a lightweight title unification bout later in September.
‘The Diamond’ posted a cryptic tweet on Thursday evening hinting at a summer showdown with ‘The Eagle.’
Gonna be a September to remember!#undisputed

“Gonna be a September to remember! #undisputed,” Poirier posted yesterday.
Shortly after his win over Holloway, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Poirier would go on to challenge Nurmagomedov for the official lightweight title. The Louisianan is on a four fight win streak against three former champions and one current champ, beating Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez and, most recently, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway.
Nurmagomedov, 30, is undefeated at 27-0 and the current 155-pound champ. The feared Dagestani last fought at UFC 229, where he submitted former two-division titleholder Conor McGregor with a neck crank in the fourth round.
If there is any truth to Poirier’s tweet, expect the UFC to make an official announcement in the coming days.
