Alistair Overeem stopped Aleksei Oleinik in the first round of the UFC St. Petersburg main event.
The top of the UFC St. Petersburg main card saw the company’s #7 ranked heavyweight Alistair Overeem stop the #9 ranked Aleksei Oleinik with strikes in the opening round.
The victory did not come without adversity. Oleinik was more than game, hurting Overeem on the feet early and unloading some serious volume. Overeem showed off his heart to weather the storm that was Oleinik, and began to attack with knees from the clinch. He started with the body, and then switched to the head.
Overeem trusted in his clinch knees to get the job done, and it worked out for him in the former of a knockdown and then subsequent ground-and-pound. Overeem now enjoys a two-fight winning wave, and just might get that chance to dance with his original UFC St. Petersburg opponent, Alexander Volkov. For Oleinik, this breaks up a two-fight winning streak.
