Ronaldo Souza will look to insert himself in the thick of the title race in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight division when he faces off against Jack Hermansson at this Saturday night’s (April 27, 2019) UFC on ESPN+ event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Before then, let’s take a look at “Jacare’s” most recent performance inside the Octagon, which occurred last November at UFC 230. That’s where Souza found himself staring down former division king, Chris Weidman, in a pivotal divisional showdown.
Naturally, Chris’s objective was to keep the fight standing, as taking Souza down to the ground is a sure-fire death sentence for anyone. And it proved to be a good strategy early on, as “All American” stunned the Brazilian bomber with a right hand, though the jiu-jitsu ace was able to shake it off.
Weidman seemed to be getting the better of most exchanges, busting up Souza who did find a little bit of success of his own, though it was clear that Chris cruised his way to win round one. Round two was more of the same stand-up affair, with Souza putting his foot on the gas.
During an exchange, “Jacare” managed to clip Chris with a right hand on the top of the head which dropped the former champion. Seeing his foe stunned and seemingly out, Souza opted to not pounce on him, expecting the ref to call the fight. When he didn’t, he reluctantly landed a few hammer fists for good measure.
Now, “Jacare” will look for an impressive win over Hermansson in an effort to finally lock down his first-ever shot at UFC gold.
