Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is not willing to wait too long before he fights for the title again.
Right after dropping the title to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 in March, former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley felt he deserved an immediate rematch. “The Chosen One” says his resumé alone should’ve warranted an instant title shot.
The UFC, instead went another way and booked Colby Covington as Usman’s maiden challenger. Woodley, on the other hand, was paired up against Robbie Lawler in a rematch that takes place this June. And according to him, this extra step is unnecessary.
”I don’t feel like I should have had to have a path [back to the belt],” Woodley said during a recent open workout at the Mall of America (via ESPN.com). “I feel like I should have been able to fight [for a title shot]. The fact that I defended my belt [five times] against true No. 1 contenders — I’m not crying over spilled milk.”
Woodley is now expecting a crack at the belt after his upcoming rematch with Lawler.
“I know my path is going to be different,” he said. “But I’m not going to fight two or three fights. I’m going to fight Robbie, and then I’m fighting for the title.”
Woodley and Lawler will headline the UFC’s upcoming card in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which takes place on June 29th.
