Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Strawweight queenpin, Rose Namajunas, makes her return to the Octagon this Saturday (May 11, 2019) when she faces Brazilian bruiser Jessica Andrade in the headlining bout of UFC 237, which takes place inside Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Local legends Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo will be in action as well, taking on knockout artists Jared Cannonier and Alexander Volkanovski, respectively.
The matchmaking is a mixed bag this week, which means there are bargains to be found. Let’s get to it!
What Went Wrong at UFC on ESPN+ 9?
We got a little more help from the judges, though not nearly as egregiously as the week before. I had Arjan Bhullar losing to Juan Adams, but gave him the third round and could see a shaky argument for giving him the second. Even without that, though, the event would have been a success thanks to strong performances from Shane Burgos, Nordine Taleb and Cowboy Cerrone.
UFC 237 Odds For The Undercard:
Ryan Spann (-145) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (+125)
Thiago Moises (-130) vs. Kurt Holobaugh (+110)
Irene Aldana (-280) vs. Bethe Correia (+240)
Clay Guida (-600) vs. BJ Penn (+450)
Luana Carolina (-170) vs. Priscila Cachoeira (+150)
Raoni Barcelos (-700) vs. Carlos Huachin (+500)
Talita Bernardo (N/A) vs. Viviane Araujo (N/A)
Thoughts: The big bargain here is Kurt Holobaugh at +110, though Irene Aldana is also worth a look despite the lopsided odds.
Thiago Moises just cannot deal with pressure, and pressure is Holobaugh’s bread and butter. The Brazilian looked downright pedestrian against Robert Watley and UFC debut opponent Beneil Dariush, both of whom stayed in his face all night. Holobaugh does have the mental baggage of two consecutive stoppage losses and won’t be the physical monster he was at 145 pounds, but the stylistic match up is too far in his favor to ignore.
Aldana is five inches taller than Bethe Correia, has almost five inches of reach on her, is the slicker boxer, punches much harder, and isn’t coming off of a nearly two-year layoff. She’s going to crush the “Pitbull,” who hasn’t definitely won a fight since stopping Shayna Baszler in 2014, and you can parlay her with Talita Bernardo to get decent-if-unspectacular odds.
Bernardo, for her part, faces the decidedly not-good Melissa Gatto, whom the former can outstrike, outwrestle, and outgrapple with ease.
UPDATE: Gatto’s out, Viviane Araujo is in. Put Aldana with Raoni Barcelos instead.
UFC 237 Odds For The Main Card:
Jessica Andrade (-120) vs. Rose Namajunas (EVEN)
Jared Cannonier (-140) vs. Anderson Silva (+120)
Jose Aldo (-135) vs. Alex Volkanovski (+115)
Thiago Alves (-110) vs. Laureano Staropoli (-110)
Diego Ferreira (-165) vs. Francisco Trinaldo (+145)
Thoughts: That is a lot of really close match ups. I suppose a bit on Andrade wouldn’t be out of place, though. That’s because Namajunas is coming off of a 13-month layoff in hostile territory and nobody but Joanna Jedrzejczyk and her killer jab have been able to stop Andrade from rag dolling them at 115 pounds. As shrewd and dangerous a striker as Namajunas is, I don’t believe she can keep the hard-charging “Bate Estaca” off of her for five rounds.
UFC 237 Best Bets:
- Single bet — Kurt Holobaugh: Bet $50 to make $55
- Parlay — Irene Aldana and Raoni Barcelos: Bet $80 to make $44.08
- Single bet — Jessica Andrade: Bet $60 to make $50
