Michael Page is no longer undefeated, and he’s no longer in the Bellator welterweight grand prix.
Douglas Lima is one step closer to becoming Bellator’s welterweight champion again.
In the Bellator 221 co-main event in Rosemont, Illinois, the Brazilian striker handed notoriously cocky British striker Michael “Venom” Page his first career defeat, knocking him out with a huge right hand after knocking him off balance with a leg kick. It was a sensational finish that cemented his place in the final of Bellator’s 170 lbs grand prix. He will face the winner of Rory MacDonald vs. Neiman Gracie, with the belt and a $1 million prize on the line.
Page came out much more aggressively than he did against Paul Daley in February. He threw an array of kicks while Lima stayed composed, measuring his opponent. The Brazilian landed a couple of leg kicks but not much else. Lima secured a takedown and into MVP’s guard. He spent the rest of the round in control from the top position, as Page offered up very little.
In round two, Page again was the aggressor and was being his usual flashy self without being particularly effective. This proved to be costly. Lima threw a leg kick that knocked MVP off-balance, and as Page rose to his feet he was wiped out with a right hand that had him breakdancing in the cage. That was ferocious.
Official result: Douglas Lima def. Michael Page by KO (punches) at :35 of round 2
