Two former champions being matched up against hungry, talented, young challengers signals a change in seasons.
“There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune”
These words were uttered by Brutus in William Shakespear’s Julius Caesar to signal a window of opportunity. The untrustable nature of that story is all the more appropriate when dealing with the UFC and its handshake agreements, promised title shots, and locker room bonuses.
However, these two bookings (one confirmed, the other potentially at UFC 240) have undeniable upside. After Aspen Ladd’s performance against Tonya Evinger at UFC 229, I picked her to be a title contender in 2019 and with this booking against a former champ, the table has been set.
Felicia Spencer routed Megan Anderson less than two weeks ago and is now a potential co-main event fighter vs Cyborg at UFC 240. This is no tomato can meant to get Cyborg back in the win column after being dismantled and dethroned by Amanda Nunes. The UFC and Cyborg have a rocky relationship, perhaps the company is considering trading açai for maple syrup?
Take care of yourself and I’ll talk to you next week.
