A rundown of the biggest headlines and news from the world of competitive grappling.
It’s been a great year for Anthony Pettis and Jorge Masvidal in the Octagon, but last weekend the pair decided to duke it out on the mats. While Masvidal is just weeks away from a huge fight against Ben Askren and Pettis is preparing to scrap with Nate Diaz, the dynamic welterweights decided to duel for charity in Pensacola, FL.
The Bully Proof Foundation put on a stacked grappling card with Pettis trying an array of flying techniques and Masvidal managing to play it safe throughout. While the main event was a draw, it definitely had it’s interesting moments.
Elsewhere on the card, Yoel Romero managed to secure a submission over fellow MMA vet Chris Barnett at about the 4 minute mark of their open weight bout.
GRAPPLING STORIES
Dillon Danis Jiu jitsu’s most polarizing character made his 2nd MMA appearance over the weekend and it went as everybody expected. Danis far outmatched his opponent in terms of grappling acumen and once the fight hit the canvas it was a matter of time before Danis secured the submission. Danis is 2-0 now with 2 submission victories, but not everybody is impressed.
Rodolfo Vieira The UFC has just signed another ADCC champ. Vieira, who hold victories over Felipe Pena, Braulio Estima and Andre Galvao, is one of the best grapplers of his generation and at 29 years of age he still has time to make a mark in the UFC when he debuts in Argentina.
Diego Sanchez YES! The Nightmare is set to debut in combat jiu jitsu at the CJJ Worlds welterweight tournament on August 18th. Sanchez will be competing against the likes of Richie Martinez as he looks to secure a world title.
