In an emotional post-fight interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Frankie Edgar explained why he never dropped down to bantamweight.
Former UFC lightweight champion is one that took on all-comers to get to the top. Part of his success and the respect he’s gotten from fans is from him taking on bigger opponents such as Gray Maynard, Benson Henderson, Brian Ortega, and Yair Rodriguez, just to name a few.
“The Answer” did admit during his Octagon interview with Joe Rogan that he was “giving up some pounds.” Edgar had entertained the idea of dropping down to bantamweight in the past but never really got around to doing it. During a post-UFC 240 interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, he explained why.
“I was only a little guy growing up and it didn’t matter,” he said. “I want to show my kid (size) doesn’t matter. But you get to high-level guys and it does sometimes. I don’t know. I don’t know what I’mma do yet.”
After his unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway on Saturday, Edgar dropped to a record of 23-7-1 (with 11 wins by submission).
