It looks like Colby Covington suffered a nasty cut just a few weeks before his welterweight bout with Robbie Lawler at UFC on ESPN 5.

According to a report by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Colby Covington was advised to pull out of his pivotal welterweight clash with Robbie Lawler at UFC on ESPN 5 due to injury.

Covington, who went on to beat Lawler via dominant unanimous decision in the UFC on ESPN 5 main event at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, required sixteen stitches after sustaining a headbutt in training.

Check out the photo below.

“This photo is Colby Covington three weeks ago. An accidental headbutt in training opened a cut that required 16 stitches. He told me a doctor told him he should consider pulling out because of its proximity to his eye,” Helwani posted on Twitter.

The doctors clearly did a good job, as Covington walked out of the Octagon last night scot-free and was even willing to go another five rounds with reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Covington and Usman traded barbs during the UFC on ESPN post-fight show on Saturday evening and both men are expected to collide in a welterweight title clash later this year. Expect the UFC to confirm the bout in the coming weeks.
